Lion Strolling In the Sunset

On the many safaris I've been on, I've taken on faith the truth that being in open-sided safari vehicles beside enormous cats is not dangerous. The guides have always told us that the lions and other dangerous critters see the vehicle as one very large animal that they have no hope of taking down and that has never hurt them, so they have no fear or desire to attack it. However, that faith was severely tested with this lion. This lion was walking straight towards me, with its eyes seemingly fixed right on me. I cringed further away from the vehicles' open side and my breathing totally stopped. When it was about eight feet away, it turned to the side to go around the vehicle. My heart was racing and I suddenly started breathing again, now in little gasps. A few minutes later, our skillful driver Jonathan raced ahead of the lion and the sunset, setting up this beautiful shot.
